Power Comes From Within
When it comes to power it is often perceived as an external force. Quite the opposite is in fact actual. Power is internal – it comes from within. It may be difficult to accept or even contemplate that this is so. The world we live in demonstrates power over people, places, and things. Unfortunately, this is the case for most people. That does not change the premise that power is internal.
Over eons people have elected to have someone else be in charge of how they live, where they work, who they interact with, their choice of spouse, and in most cases that leads to the same limiting choices for their children, grandchildren, etc. These limiting choices lead to reinforcing belief systems that power is something outside of each individual.
While it is accurate to say that as an individual your choice of action in a situation may be somewhat limited, your perception and grounding in your own innate ability to claim your power remains virtually unlimited. Having that insight provides you with a tremendous advantage in your awareness of your own ability to stay grounded and focused even in less-than-ideal conditions or surroundings.
Taking the time daily to focus on your own power and where you have perhaps been giving it away or allowing someone or something to have power over you is a worthwhile exercise. As you contemplate the power dynamics in your life areas that you once felt powerless in will occur differently to you.
That does not mean that you will necessarily have hugely different results in your life in the blink of an eye. It does mean that as you notice where your power leaks are, you have the choice to change that dynamic.
If you sit huddled at your desk with shoulders hunched in and head bent down you do not appear to inspire confidence. On the other hand, taking up space – standing confidently – arms at your sides or on your hips with a solid stance does inspire confidence. Power stances appear to influence the thoughts and behaviour of the individual and appear to also influence the behaviours of those around them.
Try a few simple power poses on your own and see what happens. Do a victory pose – arms in the air – feet slightly apart and hold that stance for a minute or two. Then track the changes that occur in your work or personal life. At the very least you may find that your sphere of influence in your work or personal life is growing. Having that realization leads to other changes in your life which allows your internal power to reassert itself and be visible.
